Do you think that essential oils are mostly just “nice smells” and don’t offer much more? I used to think the same thing.  Until I learned what I’m about to tell you. 

The thing is this: I’ve always been a very sensitive and emotional person. And at times it’s been hard to not let my emotions take control of my day and my life.   

I believe there is no separation between the body, mind and spirit. So if you are on a journey of wellness, looking at your emotional health is a MUST. We just can’t neglect it! It’s a part of our health and happiness. 

To better manage my emotions, I’ve turned to yoga, meditation, journaling, organic food and positive thinking- all of which help me to go with the flow of my emotions on a daily basis.

But sometimes, these practices are not enough to help me work through a particularly negative day….or week…..or month.  You’ve been there, right? 

Sometimes we want something that can help us transition quickly. 

When I finally agreed to try the world’s best quality essential oils a couple of years ago, I wanted to really dive in and learn how they could help me with my emotions and life. 

I remember one day after I had received my oils in the mail, I was standing in my kitchen reading a booklet on exactly how the aroma of oils in the air effects your brain and all sorts of magical other things. 

I was shocked. In the best way. (If you LOVE to learn new things…you might feel the same was as me!). 

I said outloud to my husband (whom I was reading this information outloud too), “why isn’t anybody talking about this?”

And then I realized: I can be that somebody. 🙂 (And so can you, by the way). 

There’s a reason you feel incredible after spending some solid time in nature (think: a waterfall, the ocean, a forest, a long camping trip in the woods, etc.). It’s like you can feel your energy lifting the minute you’re in it’s presence. You can breathe! Am I right? 

The reason that you feel this way is because nature is filled with what are called: negative ions. 

What are negative ions? 

“Negative ions are odorless, tasteless, and invisible molecules that we inhale in abundance in certain environments. Think mountains, waterfalls, and beaches. Once they reach our bloodstream, negative ions are believed to produce biochemical reactions that increase levels of the mood chemical serotonin, helping to alleviate depression, relieve stress, and boost our daytime energy.”

Natural negative ions are often referred to as: 

• “The Vitamins of the Air” – they create vitality and energy 
• “Nature’s Anti-Depressant” – we’re all about natural remedies 🙂 
• “Nature’s Sedative” – calming, healing and pain-relieving effect 

Negative ions clearly have a positive effect on our bodies and emotions.

At Yosemite Falls, for example,  you’ll experience over 100,000 negative ions per cubic centimeter. 

Amazing, right?!


But…..there’s just one problem.  Most of us aren’t able to spend our days in beautiful natural habitats. We’re inside working, behind desks and building empires.  So if we know that being exposed to negative ions has a profound effect on your emotions, how can we increase our exposure to it?

Enter: essential oils. 


To tell you the truth, I didn’t believe for a long time, either. 

But what I learned was that by simply diffusing high-quality (not just any) essential oils in our space, we experience more than 10x the amount of negative ions than at Yosemite Falls. 

This is the power that one use of essential oils has for negative emotions – in an instant! 

For example:

Diffusing essential oils produces a massive amount of negative ions in our space, thus reducing our stress, raising our energy and uplifting our mood (almost instantly).  So in combination with the right quality oils and diffuser, you can produce a high amount of negative ions in the air that you are taking in with each breath that you take. 

And when you diffuse, not only are you breathing in the ions that the oil produces in the air, you can also uplift your mood and shift your energy/emotions by using specific blends of oils!

To get the benefit of this, you will want to diffuse THE RIGHT OILS at least 3x a day for a minimum of 30 minutes each. You will notice a world of difference in your emotions. 

I also want to mention that this is less about removing your negative emotions and more about using the tools to sit with them and then release them – quickly! We are emotional beings and as much as we’d like to be positive and happy 100% of the time, we will always experience a spectrum of emotions (and to be honest….it’s how we feel the most ALIVE).  The secret is to manage how long you stay in the negative state and for how often.  

Another thing I learned was that the “smelling” receptors in your nose are linked to two specific sections of the brain, the amygdala and the hippocampus. These two areas are the data warehouse for emotional learning and memories. This means that simply smelling and/or diffusing essential oils, you are able to influence your emotions when you stimulate this part of your brain- almost immediately.  For me, I find that wild orange almost always uplifts my mood and I feel happy instantly (why I refer to it as the “happy oil”).


Many of us think that all we can do with essential oils is use it for aromatherapy/diffusing.  But there is another unique way that you can use them to help with your negative emotions: applying them directly on your body (with proper dilution….gotta be safe!).

Topical application of essential oils on specific acupuncture points and meridians on your body can bring an even GREATER change in your mood! This is one of my favorite ways to manage my negative emotions. 

I use specific blends that I make such as, “I believe in myself” blend, “I am fabulous blend” and the “I love myself” blend. 

This is because according to Chinese Medicine, each organ has a correlation emotion connected to it.  For example, our lungs hold our sadness.  When we hold onto negative emotions (or choose to avoid them and not feel them), they get trapped in our bodies. 

Have you ever taken a yoga class and started crying when you were in half-pigeon pose and not knowing or understanding why? This is because we hold a lot of emotions in our hips….and when we open them we are releasing stuck emotions and energy. 

We can use the powerful combination of specific essential oils to target organs and meridian points on our bodies (applying oils directly to our bodies in certain energetic areas) to experience quick emotional shifts. 


If you’re anything like me, I love trying new things and am always down to explore and see how something new feels. 

And – much to my surprise – using essential oils can and does help you to manage your negative emotions on a very deep level.  

I recently attended a workshop learning from an acupuncturist who teaches on using oils for emotional wellbeing and she said something that rocked my world and has stuck with me ever since (and I’m paraphrasing here): 

“When we use essential oils to break through emotionally, we don’t really have to even understand WHY or HOW it’s working if we can feel a sense of release.  All that matters is that you feel relief.  If it’s shifting negative emotions…..keep going”.
